After 10 years as a monk, I was still suffering. Here's what changed.
Not meditating more. Something more precise, and uncomfortable.

Probably the most valuable thing I've achieved so far is learning to stop suffering. 🙏
And curiously, after ten years as a monk, I was still suffering. Maybe once a month instead of once a day... but still. I'd get caught in loops where I felt something uncomfortable and instead of dealing with it with kindness, I judged myself. Sometimes for not knowing how to feel comfortable in social situations. Or for not daring to be as assertive and authentic as I wanted to be with my ex-wife, with my mentor, with my fellow monks.
As Happiness Is Easy! (my book ;) explains so clearly: the only way to suffer is to judge ourselves. If we don't judge ourselves, suffering is impossible. 💡
Pain isn't... pain is something life always brings. 😔 Like when I broke my elbow in two places a few weeks ago. Or when a few months ago I ended the last relationship in which I felt I may have found the mother of my children.
Pain is inevitable. Suffering is not.
[What are some areas of your life where you still suffer? Or if you've already transcended suffering, what helped you most?]
⸻
I published Happiness Is Easy! in 2016. And yet, truly stopping suffering came much later. It came when I stopped waiting for my ghosts to find me... and started going after them myself, ideally every day, at least once a week, with the support of other conscious leaders. That's exactly what we do in the Inner Circle mastermind. 🫂
Maybe you feel it too — that you've had less impact in this world than you aspire to have. 🌊 It happens to me almost every day. And I suppose that's one of the forces that keeps me moving forward, unstoppable like a river. Sometimes like the Amazon. Sometimes like a small stream between Balinese rice fields... 🌾
Every week, when I write you this newsletter, I have to face that ghost: is what I have to share valuable enough? 👻
And my answer, this week, is what you've read up to this point.
I hope it's touched you in a powerful way and, if you know someone who would like to stop suffering... 💛 If that person is you, and it's truly a priority, I invite you to send me a WhatsApp message that simply says: stop suffering. And I'll respond personally 📲
I wonder how many people truly don't suffer... I think only 1% of the monks I've known didn't suffer. It makes me glad... it moves me, to have the capacity to help others transcend it. 🙏
With love and freedom,
