Everything we want is on the other side of work.

A millionaire friend with panic attacks taught me why.

Everything we want is on the other side of work.

That's the reality. It doesn't matter what I want. If I'm willing to pay the price, it's already mine. It's already yours.

And right now I feel happiness saying this. I feel gratitude for living in a universe where this is reality — and for having this version of me that enjoys that reality.

But it wasn't always like this.

As I was sharing in the previous newsletter, when I was a little kid, the people around me praised me so much — my results, my ease getting good grades, my ease drawing, communicating, being a brilliant child: that messed me up. It filled me with fear of trying things where I wasn't the best from the very first attempt. It pulled me away from putting in the work needed to keep improving in the hardest parts of the things I love most: communication, surfing, entrepreneurship, building community…

Everything I've practiced with enough intention — not just to practice, but to improve — I've discovered how to get better at. Sometimes it requires reading, getting feedback, having an uncomfortable conversation with someone. Sometimes talking to an AI is enough. But it always requires a clear intention to improve and the willingness to invest the time, to prioritize it, until it happens.

What if that is the key to meaning: being faithful to our dreams? And what if meaning is the key to happiness?

[Is there something in your life where you really want to improve, and you know you could, but you've been avoiding putting in the work?]

A millionaire friend and client started having panic attacks and depression. It happened precisely when he realized he had made more money than he will ever be able to spend in this lifetime. In just a few years he had gone from having nothing to having everything — and then that stopped making sense.

Where do I find meaning now? How is it possible that I have everything I ever wanted and I'm not happy? What's wrong with me?

We sat down, in a circle. Exploring, sharing, without judging ourselves — precisely around the things we judge most about ourselves. The things we're most ashamed of. The ones no one has ever heard, because we've never said them, because we didn't believe we could be loved or accepted if anyone knew them…

But, in reality… how can anyone love us fully if we don't show ourselves fully?

Within a few weeks, he started getting excited again. Now the goal isn't millions. He already has those. Now it's mental health, peace, contentment — and discovering that he knows how to move forward, that he knows how to learn, that he knows how to do the hard work that isn't comfortable but is enormously rewarding.

I believe that's true for you, for me, for everyone.

Life isn't about settling. It's about finding meaning — and meaning comes from integrity, from doing the work required to be in alignment with the dreams we have. Even when it's not comfortable. Not just for ourselves, but also for the people we love and for the world we want to see.

Thank you. Thank you every time you choose to live in integrity, to devour your excuses, to do what it takes to treat yourself with integrity, with care and respect — yourself and everything around you.

For a truly kind life and world,
